After spending seven years in the automotive industry, John returned to the University of Michigan in 2008 to pursue a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on designing sustainable transportation systems. Currently, his research focuses on the relationship between vehicle design and urban form and how to design the system to be sustainable. John is developing model-based methods to optimize both urban design and vehicle designs simultaneously to provide pareto optimal solutions based upon various metrics: energy use, environmental impact, user accessibility, user cost, infrastructure cost, and company profitability.
