What inspires me about SMART:
SMART serves as a venue for two of Southeast Michigan’s most important industries, education and auto manufacturing, to come together and think about common issues—in this case, regarding New Mobility. The issue of Sustainable Mobility and Accessibility is a perfect example of a complex system that gains from being addressed using the tools and approaches that we have fostered here at the University at the Center for the Study of Complex Systems. My colleges and I look forward to continuing to bring our experiences in systems thinking and complexity modeling to this important global issue. On a more personal level, the quest for sustainable mobility relates to my hope that my two grandchildren will be able to get around as easily as I do in an even healthier environment.
Biography:
Carl P. Simon is Professor of Mathematics, Economics, and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. His research interests center around mathematical models which involve natural dynamics or motion over time. He has applied dynamic modeling to the movements of an economy over time, the spread of AIDS, and the evolution of biological and economic systems. Carl has also conducted research on how political office holders manipulate economic parameters to achieve their goals. In May 1999, the University established the Center for the Study of Complex Systems and appointed Carl director. He is co-author of a textbook called Mathematics for Economists. Carl teaches calculus and operations research at the Ford School. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University
