Walter McManus

Walter McManus is a Research Scientist at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute in Ann Arbor, MI. He is an applied economist with 20 years of experience in transportation energy and the automotive industry. He also holds a secondary appointment as Visiting Scholar & Research Engineer at the Transportation Sustainability Research Center within the Institute of Transportation Studies, University of California, Berkeley, CA
He received a BA in economics from Louisiana State University and earned a PhD in economics from UCLA (where he was a Sidney Stern Fellow). His research is currently focused on issues arising from the interaction of transportation, society, and the environment. His primarily interest is in improving the performance (private, social, and environmental) of the transportation system and the automotive industry by generating useful knowledge through research.
His business experience includes nine years with General Motors (holding various positions in market analysis, and product development; and a year in a components plant as a production supervisor) and five years with J.D. Power and Associates as executive director of forecasting and analytics.
He received the National Association for Business Economics' 2007 Abramson Award for "The link between gasoline prices and vehicle sales: economic theory trumps conventional Detroit wisdom" (Business Economics 1.42(2007): pp. 54-60).
