DTE Energy
Haukur (Hawk) Asgeirsson is the manager of Power Systems Technologies at Detroit Edison, DTE Energy’s electrical utility. In his current position, Hawk is responsible for integrating distributed resources into the transmission and distribution planning, and operating process. Since 2002, he has coordinated installation of 20 distributed generation projects, totaling nearly 12 MW, to support the Detroit Edison distribution system. The Power System Technology group also manages renewable energy interconnections and smart grid technology solutions for Detroit Edison. Hawk is a member of GridApp, a consortium of utilities whose mission is to transition best technologies and best practices into broader use by member utilities.
Hawk is also involved in a U.S. Department of Energy contract on distributed energy resource aggregation communication and control. In this project, a real-time distribution modeling system was created that integrates real-time distribution circuit information, real-time DG information and makes real-time DG operating recommendations, including offering aggregated DG for sale to the independent system operator.
Hawk has co-authored IEEE Power Engineering papers on the effect of reducing voltage for energy conservation and on a lightning storm severity assessment system designed and developed at Detroit Edison.
He is a member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, the EPRI Distributed Energy Resource Advisory Council and is a registered professional engineer in the State of Michigan. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering
