Biography:
Panos Y Papalambros holds a diploma from the National Technical University of Athens and M.S. and PhD degrees from Stanford University. He has been a faculty member at Michigan since 1979, where he has served as Department Chair for Mechanical Engineering and has founded several laboratories and centers, including the Ford Automotive Durability Simulation Center (1992-95); the Automotive Research Center (1993-2003), a US Army Center of Excellence; and the first General Motors Collaborative Research Laboratory (1998-2002). His research interests include design science and systems optimization, with applications to product design and automotive systems. He is co-author of the textbook Principles of Optimal Design: Modeling and Computation (1988, 2000). He is a Fellow of ASME and SAE, and the recipient of ASME’s Design Automation Award, Machine Design Award, Joel and Ruth Spira Outstanding Design Educator Award, and Japan SME’s Design and Systems Achievement Award. He serves as editor of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design
