What inspires me about SMART:
Solving sustainable transportation problems requires a web of diverse researchers, policy and planning practioners, and representatives of the industries both established and emerging that serve the sector -- just the sort of network of which SMART is a hub.
Biography:
John M. DeCicco, Ph.D., is a senior lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE), where he teaches and guides student projects on sustainable energy strategies with a focus on transportation energy and climate issues. From 2001 to June 2009, he was senior fellow for automotive strategies at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), where he was engaged in analysis and advocacy of policies for addressing transportation sector energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. From 1990–2000, he was transportation director at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Dr. DeCicco's research examines issues and seeks solutions for the energy and climate challenges associated with transportation, particularly the automobile. His work entails technology assessment and policy analysis addressing conventional and advanced vehicles; petroleum, biofuels, hydrogen, electricity and other transportation energy technologies; integrative analysis of vehicle-fuel systems and their relation to infrastructure and land use; regulations, incentives, cap-and-trade programs, carbon management strategies and other options for market-based transformation of transportation in the United States and globally. DeCicco is also a pioneer in developing consumer-oriented automotive eco-ratings as the creator of ACEEE's Green Book and developer of the Yahoo! Autos Green Ratings. He has three books and over 80 publications to his credit, and received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University in 1988.
